Annual Banquet - March 18, 2006
The annual
banquet of the Ellwood-Wampum Rod & Gun Club was held at the New Beaver
Borough Volunteer Fire Department Hall on Saturday, March 18, 2006.
The 221 people in attendance enjoyed meals of stuffed chicken breast or
braised steak. David Custozzo was the master of ceremonies and led
everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance as well as pronouncing the
invocation for the evening's meal. The guest speaker was Mr. Bob
Miles, a teacher at Laurel High School, who sponsors the Laurel Conservation
Club which has a membership of 180 students. These high school
students participate in outdoor activities and were represented by Travis
Book and Shane Brenneman who presented a PowerPoint presention with Mr.
Miles. Mr. Miles discussed the "Laurel Sportsman's Night
Out" which has been sponsored by the club for more than 20 years
and is usually held on the last Friday in February at the school. A
highlight at this event is the "Wall of Fame" where hunters of all
ages provide their trophy buck mounts for display on the gymnasium wall.
Those who submit their trophies receive a ticket for a gun raffle. The
gun has been sponsored by the Ellwood-Wampum Rod & Gun Club for the last
two years. The Conservation Club students run two co-operative trout
nurseries as well as help with the "Ducky Derby" in New
Castle which benefits the American Cancer Society.
The president of the
Ellwood-Wampum Rid & Gun Club, Bill Boots, gave an overview of the
club's activities during the past year. The major improvement on the
club's property was the construction of the "Ted Garda NRA Learning
Center". It is a youth education center which was constructed
with funds from an NRA grant. The club also conducted a youth
pheasant hunt in October as well as the "club members only"
pheasant hunt which was held at Gobbler's Knob last fall. The board of
directors recently voted to purchase an updated trap that will serve as a
safety feature for trap shoots conducted when the weather turns warmer.
Anyone interested in participating may contact Bill Boots.
The range road gate
lock will be changed effective Saturday, April 1, 2006. Members may
obtain a new key at any regular meeting on the second Monday of the month,
board of directors' meeting on the last Monday of the month, or turkey shoot
held every Tuesday through April 11, 2006. Fall turkey shoots will be
from September 5 - November 21, 2006.
Current regular and
senior members must renew memberships by March 31, 2006 to avoid
